England 1-1 Ukraine
Yevhen Konoplyanka made the most of Jermain Defoe’s offside finish with the goal that got Ukraine’s journey off to a promising start last night. The teams drew 1-1 at Wembley with Roy Hodgson’s captain Steven Gerrard sent off late on.
England began yesterday’s game well, and Jermain Defoe scored a wonderful goal, but it was disallowed for him fouling an opposition. Yevhen Konoplyanka then scored a brilliant goal, but curling the ball past Gerrard and Joe Hart and in. It was more a number 10’s goal than a number 19’s.
England were suffering and couldn’t really make anything work. The Three Lions were still looking timid in the last minutes, but they earned a penalty on eighty-six minutes and Frank Lampard scored an equaliser that brought the intense pressure of England. Gerrard though, earned himself a second yellow card, and the captain was suspended for the next contest, San Marino (a contest of sorts). Neither England nor Ukraine could find a winner, and so the match ended 1-1.
